TAHLIA

After Henri left, Tahlia lingered in bed for a few minutes before rising to wash his seed off her body. It was a familiar routine, washing last night’s pleasures from her skin, but this was the first time a lover had released himself to her and regretted it. It was inconceivable. She had never been rejected by a man before.

Ever.

Standing naked in the middle of the room, Tahlia glanced down at her body, but it did not make her feel any better. She already knew she was beautiful. She was naturally blessed, but she also worked hard to maintain her beauty, to be everything a man could ever desire. From the oils she washed her hair with, to the alluring designs she painted on her skin, even her walk was carefully curated to flatter her assets.

And her assets were perfect.

Tahlia huffed out a frustrated breath. Henri wanted her. She had seen it when she danced for him last night. He couldn’t take his eyes off her. His lust was palpable, not to mention visible. She had woven her web of desire and wrapped him up tight in her silk threads, ready to devour him, and yet he had resisted her. Because he thought she was Nasir’s spy or assassin.

Her heart had almost atrophied when he leveled the accusation at her. It was laughable. She had trained her whole life, but not in the art of killing or deception. She had been trained to please men. To smile at them. Dance for them. Seduce them. She had never taken a life or been tempted to search for secrets.

Which made her task that much more difficult.

Once she was dressed, with her hair woven into a long braid over her shoulder, Tahlia quickly moved around the room, searching for anything she could possibly use. It was likely that Henri would be away for several hours trying to win the other Merovian kings to his side, but even so, her insides trembled and her movements were panicked. She lifted cushions and ran her hands along the edges of furniture. She even searched beneath the mattress, but she didn’t find anything. It was like the man kept nothing personal in the one place that should be his safe haven. Either he had nothing of personal value or he was hiding it elsewhere.

Tahlia perched her hands on her hips and glanced around the room as she tried to think. The room had two walls, which left it completely open to the elements, and it had one door which led directly out to the hall of the king’s quarter. Being several stories high, no one could ever hope to climb the palace wall to reach it, and she doubted it would be safe to descend to the ground in haste. Kings always required an escape route in case the palace was invaded, which meant there had to be another door somewhere.

Her eyes fixed on the wall to her right. It was covered in wallpaper featuring a beautiful, bright mosaic pattern.
